Carl A. Kroch University Librarian Gerald Beasley announced today the appointment of Jane Bunker as the new Director of Cornell University Press (CUP).

“In the rapidly changing world of scholarly publishing, Jane brings a unique combination of experience and vision to her new role” said Beasley, to whom the Press has reported since January 1, 2018. “I am thrilled and excited to welcome her to Ithaca.”

Bunker is currently Director of Northwestern University Press, where she has served since 2010. Under her leadership NUP significantly developed its profile, growing widely respected lists in poetry, philosophy, theater and performance studies, and Chicago regional books, as well as enacting a comprehensive digital strategy. Bunker has also served on the board of directors and a wide range of committees for the Association of University Presses. She previously served as Associate Director and Editor-In-Chief at the State University of New York Press, and holds a BA in philosophy from St. Norbert College and an MA in philosophy from Fordham University. Bunker succeeds Dean Smith, who left CUP in June 2019 to become Director of Duke University Press.

“I am honored to be named the new director of Cornell University Press,” said Bunker. “I look forward to joining my talented colleagues and working together to continue the historical mission of publishing scholarly work of enduring excellence and partnering with authors to make great books for a growing global readership.”

Bunker will begin her new role on March 16 and is the first woman to lead Cornell University Press, the first university press to be established in the United States. Founded in 1869, CUP continues its longstanding mission to foster a culture of broad and sustained inquiry through the publication of scholarship that is engaged, influential, and of lasting significance. Works published under CUP imprints reflect a commitment to excellence through rigorous evaluation, skillful editing, thoughtful design, strategic marketing, and global outreach.
