Guidelines for Submitting a Work of Fiction or Creative Nonfiction

Please read these guidelines carefully. We publish a limited number of novels, short story collections, memoirs, and essay collections under our Three Hills regional trade imprint. We focus on works set in New York State, and especially those set north of Manhattan. We are interested in commercial fiction with literary crossover—including literary fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, mystery, crime, and thriller.

We are especially interested in work by marginalized voices that have been historically underrepresented in publishing.

Three Hills does not publish romance, fantasy, young adult, children’s literature, poetry, drama, or works in translation.

We welcome unagented submissions. Please submit your work by sending a query letter that includes a brief description of the project, a brief author bio, and two recent comp titles (published roughly within the last three years). Attach the first 30–50 pages of your manuscript as a Word doc or PDF, formatted as follows:

·         One-inch margins
·         Double-spaced
·         Your name and the page number on every page
·         Word count of full manuscript must be 60,000–90,000 words

Authors whose projects make it through this initial screening process will be invited to submit their full manuscript for internal and external review.
