Manuscript Editing

If I could build a house of words I would live in it. I would choose solid multisyllabic words for the foundation with prefixes and suffixes closed up, use good classic idioms for trim, semicolons for hinges, and allow a colloquialism for the front door. Whatever you dream of doing with your words, rest assured that if you publish with Cornell, the masterly manuscript editing department will take excellent care of them.

I joined Cornell University Press in 2000. Prior to that I worked at Ballantine Books, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, PEN American Center, and the Asia Society. I hold an MFA in creative writing and served as a fiction editor for the Asian Pacific American Journal. I work on books in our Southeast Asia Program Publications imprint and also enjoy handling projects in medieval studies and literary studies, as well as those with an extensive illustration program.

I started in publishing as the editor in chief of my high school yearbook, but took a circuitous path through political science studies, travel copywriting, ESL teaching in Poland, an escapist year in London obtaining a master’s degree in Slavic studies, and nonprofit work before ending up at the press. I’m known around the building for my interest in the history of the press and Sage House (I even wrote a short book about it for our 150th anniversary!), and was once called “unflappable” by an author.

I eagerly and excitedly joined the Cornell University Press team as a Production Editor in 2019. When I’m not enjoying the work and whimsy of Sage House, you’ll find me reading, gardening, trying out new recipes, watching terrible horror movies, and wrangling my toddler with my partner.

As a production editor at Cornell University Press, I take great pleasure in highlighting the strength and beauty of our authors’ words and managing their projects from manuscript to bound book. Before joining the creative, energetic team at CUP, I earned a master of arts in teaching English and went on to become managing editor of Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art. When my nose is not buried in a manuscript, I can be found writing fiction, binding books, and spending time with my husband, son, and two adorable rescue cats.

I didn’t know what my dream job was until I was already doing it. Through twists and turns I learned that I enjoyed working in a team environment and was good at managing projects. I was intrigued with the idea of making books. I found editing thrilling. All of the above go into my work at the press. Our science books are my favorites, though working on bird guides is sometimes slow going as I keep stopping to drool over a beautiful or quirky-looking bird I’d like to see some day.
