A Brief History of Future Pandemics

Return to Home

In November 2014 we published The Viral Network: A Pathography of the H1N1 Influenza Pandemic by Theresa MacPhail. In what Bioscience called a “unique perspective” MacPhail examines our collective fascination with and fear of viruses through the lens of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

Chapter 4 of The Viral Network looks to the future by checking in on past pandemics. MacPhail’s assessment and analysis are even more timely now as we all look at our fears and think about the possibility of the future. As part of the worldwide effort to understand and deal with the COVID-19 virus as well as our fear and anxiety, we’re sharing chapter 4 here.

More recently, MacPhail wrote this for the Scientific American Blog Network.
